Being a phlebotomist isn’t just fun to say — it’s a rewarding way to help care for others. As a vital part of laboratory testing, you draw blood and collect other specimens from patients for diagnostic testing.
Phlebotomists usually work in hospitals or outpatient laboratories and have direct contact with patients.
Phlebotomy program
Our program provides you with the education and experience needed for a career as a phlebotomist in a clinical laboratory setting. Multiple classes are held throughout the year, and we rotate where they’re held to different locations across our system.
Our classes are seven weeks long. Following the training, you’ll receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to take the certification exam for a phlebotomy technician offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
Class sizes are limited. Depending on the class site, the number of students accepted ranges between three and eight people.
Requirements
To apply for our program, you must have a high school diploma or GED. You may be required to take additional testing if you’re selected for an interview.

If you’re selected for the program, you’ll need to provide additional documentation before orientation. This documentation is required by the agencies that regulate and certify our program. You’re responsible for any costs associated with obtaining these documents:
- copy of your high school diploma, GED or transcript
- proof of health insurance
- FBI fingerprint check
- PA Child Abuse History Certification
- PA criminal background check
- History of all vaccinations from birth to present day (if you’re not able to locate your records, titers may be drawn for testing and results could take several weeks)
You’ll also need to complete a drug screen and nicotine test (we’re a nicotine-free company).
Curriculum
Our program provides one-to-one clinical training and classroom education. Our classes include 85 hours of classroom learning and 150 hours of clinical training.
The first two full weeks of the program are scheduled as classroom instruction. Four weeks of clinical rotations follow, along with a few hours of classroom instruction and group meeting time to end each week.
Admission and tuition
Each class has a deadline for application. Ten weeks before the start of a session, we’ll review applications to schedule interviews. If you’re selected for the class, you’ll be notified six to eight weeks before the beginning of the session.
You’ll also receive instructions on how to provide required documents and other steps in the registration process. If you’re not selected for the class, you’ll also be notified at that time.
The cost for the WellSpan Phlebotomy Training Program is $900. You’ll need to pay the tuition fee no less than four weeks before the start of the class. This fee includes the cost of textbooks and a CPR training class.

You may fill out an application for more than one location but will need to complete one for each site individually. Class sizes are limited, and if you’re not selected for a class, please consider applying for the next class.
If you missed the application deadline for the location you indicated on your application, your application will be held and considered for the next class at that location.
You must complete and submit a reference form with your application. At least two references must be submitted, and the people you list need to be familiar with your professional skills or work history.

WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital
Classroom education will be held at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital. Clinical training will rotate between WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital and several WellSpan outpatient locations in Franklin County.
Classes are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Clinical hours will be from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for both hospital and outpatient locations.
WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital
Classroom education will be held at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital. Clinical training will rotate between WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and several WellSpan outpatient locations in Adams County.
Classes are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Clinical hours will vary according to the location (hours can vary from 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 7:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).
WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital
Classroom education will be held at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital. Clinical training will rotate between WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and several WellSpan outpatient locations in Lebanon and Lancaster counties.
Classes are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Clinical hours will vary according to the location (hours can vary from 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 7:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).
WellSpan York Hospital
Classroom education will be held at the WellSpan Phlebotomy Education Program office in York. Clinical training will rotate between WellSpan York Hospital and several WellSpan outpatient locations in York County.
Classes are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Clinical hours will vary according to the location (hours can vary from 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 5:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and 7:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).
