Research, accolades and application process

Scholarly activity and WellSpan Discovery Day

Though primarily a community hospital, WellSpan York Hospital and the Internal Medicine Residency Program both have a long tradition of strong engagement in research and other scholarly activities.

In addition to our faculty, the WellSpan Research Center provides support, including project design and implementation, statistical analysis and manuscript creation and submission, for scholarly activity. Our research and scholarly activity ranges from case reports to quality improvement projects to prospective clinical trials — and everything in between.

Each spring, residents present their research work at WellSpan Discovery Day, which showcases scholarly activity across WellSpan’s training programs. Residents and faculty also frequently present their scholarly work at local, regional, national and even international meetings.

Residents who are invited to present their research at meetings receive institutional support.

The Center for Global Health Education offers residents training in local and international rotations in low-resource settings. During these trips, residents gain invaluable experience while helping to improve the lives of children and adults living in poverty.

Application information

WellSpan’s Internal Medicine Residency Program exclusively accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We hold interviews from late October through mid-January.

All interviews for the 2025 - 2026 interview season will be conducted virtually for the residency starting July 2026.

The recruiting committee performs a holistic review of applications, with special attention to the following:

Within your personal statement, please mention why you’re interested in applying to WellSpan York Hospital’s internal medicine residency program.
United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) results are a required part of your application.
For those graduating from an Osteopathic institution, we will accept your Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) results in place of USMLE scores.
We will consider applications from recent medical school graduates first. We evaluate each application individually.
We sponsor H-1-B and J-1 visas. Candidates considering H-1-B visas must pass all steps of the USMLE by March 31, or the resident will receive a J-1 visa sponsorship.
U.S. clinical experience is desirable but not mandatory.

Because of the volume of applications that we receive, we cannot guarantee that all applicants who meet these criteria will be offered an interview.

We interpret program signals as an indication of true interest in our program. We prioritize and preferentially review those applications. Applications without signals may still be considered secondarily.
