Providing help and hope
Cancer patients face more than their diagnosis. Patients often deal with:
- loss of a job or insurance
- difficulty covering high co-pays and expensive medications
- missed paychecks due to sickness
- reduced job hours for their caregiver
Gifts to the Cancer Patient Help Fund make a direct impact on patients who are struggling with basic needs as they undergo cancer treatments.
- A $50 donation provides gift cards to help our patients and their families buy groceries.
- A gift of $75 provides financial assistance for monthly utility bills to ensure a safe, stable environment for our patients.
- A contribution of $100 ensures 25 bus rides or four $25 gas cards to help patients travel to and from doctor appointments.
In 2022, the Cancer Patient Help Fund provided $135,155 to help 300 patients and their families in our community relieve their financial burdens so they could focus on fighting cancer.

Endowment helps medical simulation
Dr. David Eitel, a long-time emergency medicine physician at WellSpan York Hospital, passed away in 2012 at the age of 63. To honor Dr. Eitel’s memory, his wife and three children created the David R. Eitel, MD, MBA, Celebration of Education Endowment to purchase new equipment for the WellSpan York Hospital Medical Simulation Center. Opened in 2008, the center allows doctors, residents, nurses and other staff members to practice their skills in a controlled setting on a variety of state-of-the-art medical simulators.
“David was always interested in learning new things,” said his wife Lynne, who described her husband of 38 years as “a gadget lover, obsessive index card carrier and passionate educator. He loved the Simulation Center and recognized the great value it had as a teaching tool.”

Spotlight on children’s health
WellSpan Health has more than 1 million encounters with children from ages 0 to 6 each year. We see the challenges our young patients face firsthand, including delays in early care that can have a negative impact for years to come. Spotlight on Children’s Health is a multi-faceted approach designed to eliminate barriers and inequities for children in their earliest stages of life to help them grow, learn, and thrive into adulthood. Key pillars include:
Safety
- Developing best practices and providing standardized screening tools for caregivers.
- Education for parents about critical safety standards for car seat installation and use.
- Education for parents about lead-poisoning prevention.
- Education about sleep safety for young children.
Literacy
- Reading in early childhood is critical for speech and language development.
- Many of our youngest patients lack the vital resources and support they need.
- WellSpan is acting with the reach out and read program in pediatric and family medicine practices distributing more than 26,000 books to young patients and families, in several different languages each year.
Special healthcare needs
- WellSpan aims to expand services for young children with unique healthcare needs through this initiative.
- Increased access to screenings for behavioral health, developmental delays and differences in our youngest patients.
- Providing invaluable information, expertise, resources, services, and support caregivers to help transform lives and overall well-being of both patients and families in York County.
